Pictured is my QUAD stereo multiplex decoder taken apart many years ago when it had the electrolytic capacitors C19 and C22 changed from 25♟ ~ that measured closer to 1♟ ~ to 47♟ and C2 which was okay changed to 22♟ as 12♟ or even 15♟ were not readily to handĬ17 which measured low was changed to a 4.7♟ 63V non electrolytic as shown on page 2 of my schematic other than these changes nothing else needed to done until 2011 when Tr1 ~ a Texas Instruments germanium 2G344 failed and was changed for a silicon BC212 using the schematic changes made by QUAD for their FM2 decoder ![]() " ~ Almost all broadcasts nowadays are stereo so there is no need to have the HT on the Blue plug switched by the QUAD 22 MON button to make the QUAD multiplex decoder respond to mono transmissions without a 19kHz pilot tone ~ By swapping the two plugs the Blue amplifier powers the heaters and HT for the FM1 which will reduce the load on the Yellow amplifier that is powering the QUAD22 Yellow and Blue plugs can be swapped at the QUAD 22. On my re-drawn schematic I make the comment " For stereo only listening. The 1965 instruction manual has a short description of the circuit function which along with my schematic notes should explain how the decoder functions and how using silicon transistors will not affect the sound but should give the decoder more years of active service If you are interested in repairing or modifying a QUAD multiplex MPX decoder then first download my re-drawn schematic which is an 'upside down' annotated version of the original plus a modified drawing showing the changes to make the FM I decoder into a silicon transistor version similar to that used in the QUAD FM II or FM2 tuner ~ QUAD FM1 Stereo MPX Decoder Silicon Mod ~

Want to brush up on more typography terms and skills? Go back to the basics with my class, Typography: the Fundamentals. ![]() Examples of differing degrees of legibility.Ī very legible typeface such as ITC Flora (left) is made less readable (right) by how it is typeset. Factors affecting readability include point size, line spacing (or leading), letter spacing, word spacing, line length, and alignment. Readability, on the other hand, relates to how the type is set or arranged. The legibility of a typeface is determined by the characteristics of the design, including x-height, character shapes, width, stroke contrast, the size of the counters, and weight – all of which contribute to the ease of distinguishing one letter from another. Readability refers to how the typeface is arranged. Legibility refers to the design of the typeface. These two terms both relate to ease of reading from a typographic perspective. (right) The capital B is a different character. (left) The lowercase b character is represented by four glyphs in Jenson italic: the standard b, an alternate, a small cap, and the superscript. This is a collection of glyphs representing the character a. However, a cap N and an italic n are different characters. For example, a lowercase n character may be represented by glyphs of a standard lowercase n, a small cap n, and a swash n. In addition, more than one glyph can represent one character in the same font. The character a can be represented by many glyphs set in different typefaces. The Cancer symbol is a crab, and its glyph looks like two six’s placed in a circle. …and this is a showing of Garamond Condensed, a typeface design.Ī character is the symbol representing a letter.Ī glyph is the specific shape, design, or representation of a character. Each sign in the zodiac has a neat little symbol called a glyph that represents the mythology behind it. To summarize, designers select typefaces for their work, but then use fonts to create the actual document or design. ![]() Each point size of a given typeface – such as 8 point, 10 point, 12 point – is considered a different font. In metal, a font refers to every character included in a single size of a particular typeface. In phototype typography, which preceded digital technology, a font refers to the film onto which the typeface is imprinted. Today’s digital fonts are created with font production tools these fonts are considered to be software. Typeface refers to the style, or design, of a set of characters (such as the Helvetica, Bodoni, or Times Roman typefaces).įont, on the other hand, refers to the technology – or method – used to reproduce or set the typeface. Many people who use fonts everyday have begun to say “font” when they really mean “typeface.” The words in each pair are related, but they refer to different things – and they are not interchangeable. In this blog post, we will shed light on three pairs of words that are widely misused. In the world of type and design, there are a number of typography terms that are either commonly confused with other terms, or are simply misunderstood in their own right. ![]() La colors lip gloss (happiness) $1.25 22. Other reported sky events await explanation, but seizing on alien ships as the cause seems hasty. It was only recently that lightning sprites were positively identified and studied. That's not to say there aren't still mysteries out there. Each time, there's been a natural explanation for whatever caught my attention, and to date I've seen nothing that required an alien visit for explanation. I'm not qualified to delve into the psychology of UFO sightings, but I've seen some strange stuff over the 2,000+ nights I've sojourned under the night sky. ![]() Light from the distant island is bent downward into a new path that the eye thinks emanates from the air above the water. In contrast to the "wet road" appearance of an inferior mirage, superior mirages can occur when the air layer near the water (or ground) is considerably colder than the air directly above it. This is a superior mirage of Granite Island in Lake Superior. How likely is this? And why does nearly every photo of a purported alien show a being with a human form? #4 Superior mirages Spaceship or ? Okay, mirages can truly be weird. Even if the extraterrestrials could build a rocket, judging by the incredible variety of extraterrestrial chariots that have been reported, we're being visited constantly by a great many alien civilizations. But intelligent, spaceship-building life? Hmmm. With the discovery of more than 3,500 exoplanets to date in the short span of a couple decades, life seems ever more likely with every new find. Other atmospheric phenomena confused for UFOs include sundogs and related halo phenomena. Their saucer shapes can be both beautiful and evocative. #3 Lenticular clouds This altocumulus lenticularis cloud looks like it's ready to beam up a rock sample. These UFO-like clouds form when fast moving air blows over mountains or hills, creating waves in the atmosphere similar to those created when you toss a pebble in a pond. Given how long the universe has been around and the ubiquity of carbon-bearing minerals, not to mention the tantalizing amino acids found in certain meteorites, I believe the necessary ingredients for life to begin have been around a long, long time. Count me among the yeses, but with a caveat. #2 Airplane contrails Sometimes, people not familiar with the sky will mistake a distant airplane contrail, the streak of condensed water vapor in the wake of the plane, as either a UFO vapor trail, comet, or fireball. I've looked at many, and it's clear, they're either natural, manmade, based on lack of information or deliberately created by a devious intellect to either befuddle, gain attention or both. I should say at the outset that I'm not a believer in the stream of UFO reports that gorge youtube every week, every year. Check out this video of Sirius twinkling. #1 Sirius The brightest star Sirius, often seen twinkling wildly on unsteady nights, is one of the most commonly reported UFO sightings along with Venus, the brightest planet. ![]() He collected the video and walked out in a huff. ![]() Facts about luminosity, twinkling, and closeness to our solar system left no impression. No matter our explanations, he was convinced it had to be a UFO. After a few questions about time and direction of the filming, it was clear he had captured the star Sirius.Īfter explaining in a non-demeaning way that he had recorded the brightest and one of the most amazing stars in the sky, the man looked at the group incredulously. He said it had to be a UFO because of its brilliance, round shape and rapid pulsations.Īs soon as the video got underway, it was obvious that the "UFO" was a bright star, jerking about from unsteady hands and rhythmically moving in and out of focus as the camera's autofocus struggled to keep the object sharp. Excitedly, he explained he'd photographed a UFO and wanted us to see it for ourselves. Once upon a time, a middle-aged gentleman attended one of my local astronomy club's meetings. Back in 1967 a friend tossed a garbage can lid into the air as I photographed. Enough to learn to make a cheapie lookalike. In an age when sightings of UFOs are rife, we look at other possibilities that may help to explain the strange apparitions many see. 10% discount in the MoMA Stores and at MoMAstore.Free Shipping every day on online orders of $35 or more.Categories, benefits, and prices are subject to change.
